Barcelona 5-1 Feyenoord, Madrid and Betis win, Atlético and Villarreal lose. The Spanish tally from Champions League matchday 1 and what remains on quiniela matchday 5.
Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 Champions League produced a night of contrasts for Spanish football. Barcelona thrashed Feyenoord 5-1 at the Spotify Camp Nou with a Raphinha brace, Real Madrid held off Inter and Betis won in Lille on their return to Europe after 21 years. On the other side of the ledger, Atlético took the lead at Anfield and still lost 2-1, while Villarreal fell 3-2 in Dortmund in stoppage time. The tally reads three wins and two defeats, and nine of the fifteen signs on this week's quiniela for matchday 5 are now settled.
This piece walks through what happened in every game involving a Spanish club, the numbers the night left behind, the six fixtures still to play on Thursday to complete the all-Champions quiniela, and how the big sides head into the weekend of La Liga, which is quiniela matchday 6.
| Match | Score | Scorers | Quiniela sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barcelona - Feyenoord | 5-1 | Raphinha 3', 57'; Adeyemi 22'; Yamal 77'; G. Jesus 85' / Steijn 82' | 1 |
| Real Madrid - Inter | 2-1 | Mbappé 14'; Valverde 23' / Carlos Augusto 77' | 1 |
| Lille - Betis | 2-3 | Ueda 12'; Alexsandro 36' / Bartra 33', 49'; Parrott 53' | 2 |
| Dortmund - Villarreal | 3-2 | Veiga (p.p.) 53'; Guirassy 80', 85' (pen.) / Mouriño 66'; Guirassy (p.p.) 90+3' | 1 |
| Liverpool - Atlético | 2-1 | Szoboszlai 40'; Mac Allister 50' / Llorente 17' | 1 |
Five games, three wins and two one-goal defeats. The most debated sign on the slip was Liverpool against Atlético, and it landed on the home win the bookmakers expected. Lille against Betis was the only game in which a Spanish side took all three points away from home.
Barcelona had their European opener under control inside a quarter of an hour. Raphinha scored in the 3rd minute and Karim Adeyemi, playing his first Champions League game in a Barça shirt, curled in the second from outside the box in the 22nd. By half-time the game was effectively settled in front of 45,838 spectators at the Spotify Camp Nou.
The second half turned into a showcase. Raphinha completed his brace in the 57th minute from a Pedri pass, and Lamine Yamal, who started with the captain's armband, scored a direct free kick in the 77th. Sem Steijn pulled one back for Feyenoord in the 82nd, but Gabriel Jesus headed in Yamal's cross in the 85th to make it 5-1 and open his account for the club.

Hansi Flick, now in his third season in charge, picked Joan Garcia; Koundé, Cubarsí, Christensen, Cancelo; Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Olmo, Adeyemi; Raphinha. The Brazilian is already up to eight goals this season and is comfortably the most in-form player in the squad. If you want to understand where Barça's goals come from without Lewandowski, we broke it down in Barça without Lewandowski: who scores the goals.
Atlético started exactly as they planned. Marcos Llorente put Simeone's side ahead in the 17th minute from a Julián Álvarez pass, his fifth goal in three visits to Anfield. But Andoni Iraola's Liverpool, in his first Champions League game as a manager, levelled before the break through Szoboszlai in the 40th minute, from a cross by Ronald Araújo, who is on loan from Barcelona of all clubs.
Alexis Mac Allister settled it in the 50th minute with a left-footed strike from around twenty yards after an Isak assist. It was Liverpool's first win after conceding first since January. For Atlético it was another night of taking the lead and then retreating, a pattern already visible in La Liga that we examined in Simeone year 16: the rebuild. Bradley Barcola, the £123m signing, made his home debut and went off injured.
Madrid beat Mourinho's Inter with two goals in nine minutes, Mbappé in the 14th and Valverde in the 23rd. Carlos Augusto pulled one back in the 77th and the closing stages were nervous at the Bernabéu, but the score held. The backdrop to that reunion is in Mourinho returns to the Bernabéu.
Betis returned to the Champions League after 21 years and did it with an away comeback. Ueda gave Lille the lead in the 12th minute, Bartra equalised in the 33rd, Alexsandro restored the lead in the 36th, and in four second-half minutes Betis turned it around: Bartra in the 49th and Parrott in the 53rd. The full story of the night is in Betis return to the Champions League after 21 years.
Villarreal left Germany feeling they deserved more. A Veiga own goal in the 53rd minute opened the scoring, Mouriño equalised in the 66th from a Mikautadze corner, and Guirassy, in his 100th appearance for Dortmund, scored in the 80th and again from the penalty spot in the 85th after a Mouriño foul. Guirassy then put through his own net in the 93rd minute to leave the final score at 3-2.
| Match | Score | Scorers |
|---|---|---|
| PSG - Slovan Bratislava | 6-1 | Ferran Torres (3), Dembélé (2), Fabián Ruiz / Camara |
| Porto - Manchester City | 0-2 | Haaland 47', 90+1' |
| Napoli - Arsenal | 0-1 | Ødegaard 75' |
| Stuttgart - Viking | 3-1 | Demirović (3) |
| Sporting CP - Galatasaray | 3-1 |
Wednesday's six games produced 25 goals. Haaland reached 36 Champions League goals for City, level with Agüero, but in 40 games against the Argentine's 64. Demirović scored a hat-trick in just twelve minutes for Stuttgart.
This week's quiniela is made up entirely of Champions League fixtures. After Tuesday and Wednesday, nine of the fifteen signs are known, as is the pleno al 15: Liverpool 2, Atlético 1. These are the six games still to be played on Thursday.
