Quiniela jornada 12: Rayo v Athletic suspended — is it an X?

Rayo v Athletic, match one on the quiniela, was abandoned at 0-0 amid a fan protest. What the lottery's rule says and what it means for your coupon.

Week 12 of La Quiniela — the jornada 12 coupon — opened with a fixture nobody could have called: Rayo Vallecano v Athletic Club, match one on the slip, was abandoned at Vallecas on Saturday 10 October with the score at 0-0. Rayo's own fans showered the pitch with plastic balls and paper aeroplanes in protest at club president Raúl Martín Presa, and the referee eventually called it off. Since then, thousands of quiniela players have been asking the same thing: with Rayo v Athletic suspended, what happens to the quiniela? Is it a draw, a random draw, or void?

Here is what we actually know, minus the rumour mill: what happened in Vallecas, the rule Spain's state lottery operator (Loterías y Apuestas del Estado) applied to an identical case just four months ago, and what it all means for your coupon — and for your prediction league.

What happened at Vallecas

The LaLiga matchday-eight fixture kicked off at 2pm. It was meant to be a homecoming: Rayo had not played at their own ground for 146 days. The Madrid regional government had suspended the club's concession on the stadium after an audit flagged safety, maintenance and sanitation failings, forcing Rayo to host games at Leganés' Butarque.

In the 13th minute, as Athletic lined up a corner, thousands of plastic balls and paper planes rained down from the stands. A banner aimed at the president went up, along with chants telling him to go. Referee José María Sánchez Martínez stopped play and sent both teams to the dressing rooms. After roughly half an hour the game restarted, but the barrage resumed — and after talking to both captains, both coaches and the police's security coordinator, the referee abandoned it for good.

  • Score at the moment of suspension: 0-0.
  • Time played: just over 20 minutes on the clock; Bilbao Hiria reports 65 regulation minutes still to play.
  • Both clubs wanted to finish it on Sunday, but police would not guarantee security and Rayo told their players they would train instead.
  • LaLiga will set a new date, and the Competition Committee will review the referee's report and any sanctions.

Rayo v Athletic suspended: what happens to the quiniela

This is the bit that matters for your coupon. La Quiniela's rules don't care what LaLiga or the Spanish FA decide later on. They care about the score on the pitch at the moment the referee ends the match — and that includes a suspension.

That isn't our reading of it. Back in June 2026, during round 66, the lottery operator published an official notice about Denmark v Ukraine, which was also suspended after kick-off. It said that if the game resumed within the 24-hour window set by rule 38, the final result would stand; and if it didn't, the results would be counted using the score at the moment of suspension.

Does Rayo v Athletic count as a draw (X) on the quiniela? If the operator follows the same approach as for Denmark v Ukraine in June, yes: the match was suspended at 0-0 after kick-off and will not resume within 24 hours, so match one on the jornada 12 coupon would be settled as an X. Official confirmation comes with the lottery's results count.

What about the random draw?

Plenty of people are searching for the quiniela's random-draw rule this weekend, and fair enough — it exists. It applies when a match never gets started (postponed before kick-off) and can no longer be swapped for another fixture. In that case the sign is decided by a weighted draw based on how players split between 1, X and 2. But Rayo v Athletic did start, so the rule that fits is the one for matches suspended after kick-off, not the one for postponements.

ScenarioWhat counts on the quiniela
Suspended after kick-off, resumed in timeThe final result
Suspended after kick-off, not resumed in timeThe score when it was stopped
Postponed before kick-off, no replacementWeighted random draw

Quiniela jornada 12 2026: Saturday's results

With match one all but settled, the weekend coupon is very much alive. Saturday already delivered four of the fifteen signs plus the Pleno al 15 tiebreaker, with Barcelona keeping their perfect league record and Real Madrid edging the match that closes the coupon.

MatchScoreSign
1. Rayo v Athletic0-0 (suspended)X expected
2. Alavés v Atlético1-22
3. Barcelona v Getafe3-01
9. Eldense v Córdoba2-11
Pleno al 15: Real Madrid v Villarreal1-01-0

Sunday brings Elche v Celta, Real Sociedad v Deportivo, Betis v Osasuna, Racing v Valencia and most of the second-division ties, with Levante v Sevilla, Burgos v Granada and Real Oviedo v Eibar wrapping things up on Monday. You can follow every result, and how your picks are doing, live on the jornada 12 page.

What it means for your prediction league

If you run a prediction league with friends, Rayo v Athletic throws up the same question as the official coupon — and it's worth settling before the group chat turns into a courtroom. The simplest fix is to borrow the lottery's own rule: the score at the moment of suspension. That way nobody gains or loses because of a decision made in an office weeks from now.

  1. Agree the rule before the results are counted: the score at the moment of suspension, just like La Quiniela.
  2. Anyone who picked X for match one should get the point now.
  3. If your league scores exact results, 0-0 is the scoreline to use.
  4. When the remaining minutes are eventually played, that result counts for LaLiga — but it doesn't change the jornada 12 coupon.

When will Rayo v Athletic be finished?

There's no official date yet. LaLiga says it will announce shortly when the remaining minutes will be played, and the Competition Committee will decide the conditions. Reports suggest it could be behind closed doors, and it has to fit a packed calendar, with league games every weekend and Athletic already owing Levante a postponed fixture. There is a recent precedent: when the 2022 Copa del Rey derby between Betis and Sevilla was halted after an object was thrown, the rest of the match was played the following day behind closed doors.

Could Rayo be punished? Yes. The regulations allow for fines and, in the most serious cases, a partial or full stadium closure for one or more matches. Nothing has been decided yet.

And if your group chat spends this weekend arguing about whether Rayo v Athletic counts as a draw, it might be a good moment to set up a prediction league with friends on quiniPrats: everyone makes their picks, the table updates itself and nobody has to keep score on the back of an envelope. No rush — whenever you fancy it.
