Real Madrid vs Inter: Mourinho's 2010 ghost is back

The Bernabéu opens the 2026/27 Champions League with Real Madrid vs Inter — the club and the stadium where Mourinho won his treble before joining Madrid. And he arrives on the back of a first defeat.

Some fixtures write themselves. Real Madrid vs Inter, matchday 1 of the Champions League league phase, Tuesday 8 September 2026, 21:00 CEST at the Santiago Bernabéu — and on the home bench, José Mourinho, back at the club he left in 2013, staring across at the club he made immortal in this exact stadium. The 2026/27 European season opens with the neatest coincidence the draw could possibly have produced.

Real Madrid vs Inter: the Bernabéu night that made Mourinho

On 22 May 2010, Mourinho's Inter beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Champions League final. The venue was the Santiago Bernabéu. Diego Milito scored both goals, on 35 and 70 minutes, and Inter completed a treble — Serie A, Coppa Italia, Champions League — that remains the only one ever achieved by an Italian club.

The detail that turns it from trivia into theatre: Mourinho had already told his players he was leaving for Real Madrid regardless of the result. He won the European Cup in his next employer's stadium, wept in Marco Materazzi's arms on the pitch, and was gone within days. Sixteen years later he is back on that touchline — wearing the other badge.

His second Real Madrid spell formally began on 13 July 2026, when he reported for pre-season. The club paid Benfica a €15 million release clause and signed him until 30 June 2029, replacing Álvaro Arbeloa. If you missed how that deal came together, we broke it down in Mourinho's return to Real Madrid.

When is Real Madrid vs Inter and what time does it kick off? Tuesday 8 September 2026 at 21:00 CEST (20:00 BST, 3pm ET) at the Santiago Bernabéu, in matchday 1 of the 2026/27 Champions League league phase.

How Madrid arrive: a first defeat, and a missed penalty in Seville

Not ideally, is the short answer. On Friday 4 September, Real Madrid lost 1-0 at Real Betis in La Liga matchday 4 — their first defeat of the campaign. The league start, game by game:

  1. Matchday 1: Espanyol 1-2 Real Madrid
  2. Matchday 2: Real Madrid 4-1 Real Sociedad
  3. Matchday 3: Real Madrid 4-0 Málaga
  4. Matchday 4: Real Betis 1-0 Real Madrid

Betis' winner came on 80 minutes through Ireland forward Troy Parrott — his first goal for the club since arriving from AZ Alkmaar. Then came the sting in the tail: deep into stoppage time, at 90+5, Kylian Mbappé had a penalty saved by Álvaro Valles. It was the first time since 2014-15 that Real Madrid have lost any of their opening four league games. We took the managerial sub-plot apart in Pellegrini vs Mourinho.

The table now reads Barcelona first on 12 points with a perfect record, Deportivo Alavés second on 10, and Real Madrid third on 9, level with Betis. Four matchdays settle nothing — but they do explain why Tuesday night at the Bernabéu carries more noise than a matchday 1 usually would.

Champions League matchday 1: every Spanish side's opener

Spain has five clubs in the league phase and all five play this week — three on Tuesday, two on Wednesday:

The 2026/27 league phase runs from 8 September 2026 to 27 January 2027. The top eight go straight through to the round of 16; those finishing 9th to 24th meet in a two-legged intermediate round. Eight games to stay above the cut-off line, in other words — which is exactly why a matchday 1 against Inter matters more than it looks.

Madrid's eight league-phase opponents: Arsenal, Roma and a trip east

The draw handed Real Madrid a lopsided set. Four at home — Inter, PSV, RB Leipzig and Austria's LASK — and four on the road, in London, Rome, Ukraine and Athens:

On paper it is manageable at home and awkward away. Arsenal is the heavyweight, and the Shakhtar Donetsk fixture — played outside Ukraine, as their European home games have been for years — adds travel and logistics rather than an obvious sporting threat. Inter on matchday 1 is one of only two genuinely serious tests Madrid face in their own stadium.

What to watch if you're picking results this week

If you follow the Champions League with a prediction league running alongside it, this week comes in two layers: European midweek, then the domestic weekend. The verified things worth knowing before you commit to anything:

  • Real Madrid arrive off a 1-0 defeat in Seville and a stoppage-time penalty miss — the external pressure is high and the Bernabéu's tolerance is low.
  • Betis and Villarreal both travel (Lille, Dortmund) on the same Tuesday as Madrid; European mileage tends to show up the following weekend.
  • Barcelona host Feyenoord at 18:45 on Wednesday, the earliest slot of the round.
  • The league phase rewards consistency across eight games rather than one big night — squads rotate more than the fixture list suggests.
  • Spain's domestic weekend returns straight after: the fixtures are listed on matchday 5 of la quiniela.

And if you enjoy European nights more with an argument attached, you can always set up a prediction league with friends and play the round between you — here's how it works, and it takes about two minutes. You don't need a perfect card to enjoy it. Sometimes it's enough to be the only person in the group chat who called that 1-0 in Seville.
