The World Cup's best player had a deal all but done with Real Madrid. Then Madrid tried to haggle down the fee — and Barcelona swooped in to steal him.
The best player at the 2026 World Cup was supposed to sign for Real Madrid. It was all but done: a four-year contract, Florentino Pérez's blessing, and a midfield slot waiting for him under José Mourinho. Then, within days, the deal for Rodri fell apart — and he ended up somewhere nobody expected: Camp Nou. This Tuesday, while Spain was still riding the high of its second World Cup star, Rodri underwent his medical at FC Barcelona's training ground.
For most of July, everything pointed to Rodri becoming Real Madrid's marquee signing for the 2026-27 season. The club had spent years hunting for someone to fill the void left by Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić in central midfield, and Mourinho saw the 30-year-old as the perfect fit: a deep-lying playmaker who could bring balance and free up Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde to push forward. According to several Spanish outlets, player and club had already agreed personal terms on a four-year deal running to 2030. All that was left was settling the transfer fee with Manchester City.
So what happened? Spanish reports close to Real Madrid reconstructed the collapse as a case of the club overplaying its hand: convinced the deal was as good as done, Madrid tried to talk City down on the agreed fee. City, unwilling to let their captain leave before lining up a replacement — the signing of midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi — refused to budge and started fielding other offers. That is where Barcelona stepped in. Sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick used the pause to pitch Rodri a sporting project and win him over in person, while back in Madrid, Mourinho watched a signing everyone had assumed was sealed slip through his fingers.
Why did Rodri choose Barcelona over Real Madrid? Sources close to the player point to two things: the delay caused by Madrid's attempt to negotiate the price down, which gave Deco and Flick time to make their move, and the presence in Barcelona's squad of up to eight of his former Spain teammates from the World Cup-winning side.

Last season, Rodri barely played at all: a serious injury kept him sidelined for nearly a year, and he arrived at the World Cup surrounded by doubts about his fitness. Eight matches later, he left the United States with the biggest title in the game and the award for the tournament's best player. He started all eight games, completed more than 650 passes at a completion rate close to 93%, and captained Spain to their second World Cup star with a 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina in the final, sealed by a Ferran Torres goal. It wasn't the first time the Manchester City midfielder had picked up a major individual honour — he'd already won France Football's Ballon d'Or back in 2024, a separate award from the World Cup's own Golden Ball.
When will Rodri be unveiled at Camp Nou? The club is planning to present him on Wednesday, during the 61st edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy against Egypt's Al Ahly, provided the paperwork with Manchester City is finalised in time. His competitive debut is a different matter — he's still recovering from back surgery, and Barcelona open their LaLiga campaign at Camp Nou on 27 August against Athletic Club.
It's been an intense few days, but everything is sorted now. I'm very happy to be here. Playing for Barça is a dream.— — Rodri, on arriving in Barcelona
The midfielder also said he was looking forward to meeting his new teammates and competing for everything on offer this season, in a dressing room where he'll already be reunited with much of Spain's World Cup-winning squad.
With Rodri thrown into the mix, the 2026-27 LaLiga transfer market is proving once again that no squad is truly settled until the ball starts rolling — and that's good news if you enjoy predicting results, too: the more a midfield shifts, the harder, and the more fun, it gets to call the outcome of each round.
