Spain's Quiniela adds women's football for the first time

Spain's 80-year-old football pools are being rewritten. From 2026-27, the women's Liga F takes 15% of Quiniela revenue and its matches can appear on the coupon. Here's what the decree actually says, when you'll notice it, and how to pick games you've never watched.

If you have never filled one in, the Quiniela is Spain's football pools: fifteen fixtures, a home-draw-away call on each, and a national argument every Sunday about the one you got wrong. It has been running since 1946. This Saturday LaLiga returns and the coupon will look exactly as it always has — but not for much longer. From the 2026-27 season, the women's Liga F takes a 15% share of Quiniela revenue and its matches can start appearing among those fifteen. It is the biggest structural change the Quiniela has seen in eighty years.

What Royal Decree 369/2026 actually says

This did not come from a marketing meeting at the state lottery. It came from the Spanish statute book. Royal Decree 369/2026 took effect on 1 July 2026 and rewrites how the money the Quiniela generates is split between government and football. In every previous version of that formula, women's football simply was not there. Now it is.

The new split reads as follows:

• Provincial councils and local authorities: 49.95%
• Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional, the men's professional league: 30.50%
• Liga Profesional de Fútbol Femenino, better known as Liga F: 15%
• The Spanish football federation, earmarked for the non-professional game: 4.55%

That 15% is genuinely new money for clubs that, not long ago, had no professional structure at all. And it is not a one-off grant with an expiry date attached. The decree specifies that payments to both professional leagues are made monthly, which turns the Quiniela into recurring, forecastable income for Liga F rather than an annual cheque to be haggled over. The same text also does some housekeeping, abolishing the Quiniela participation oversight committee that had been in place since 1998.

Why a slice of the coupon beats a sponsorship deal

The percentage is the eye-catching bit, but the important part is where it comes from. A sponsor can walk away the moment its marketing strategy changes. The Quiniela cannot: it is public money, set by decree, tied to the weekly takings of a game that has been part of Spanish bar-counter life for eight decades. Joining that split moves Liga F from the shop window of Spanish football into its plumbing.

When you will actually see a Liga F match on the coupon

Here is the wrinkle almost nobody has mentioned, and the reason this Saturday will feel entirely normal. LaLiga kicks off on 15 August. Liga F does not begin until the weekend of 29 and 30 August. For the first two weekends of the men's season there are simply no women's fixtures to put on the coupon. The opening rounds will be the same fifteen men's matches you have always had.

What the decree does not say: how many matches

It is worth separating the headline from the small print here, because plenty of coverage has not. Royal Decree 369/2026 fixes how the money is divided. It does not fix how many Liga F fixtures each coupon must carry. That call does not belong to the cabinet — it belongs to Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, the state operator that assembles the Quiniela week by week. Several outlets report that it will be up to four of the fifteen, but that figure appears nowhere in the legal text, so treat it as an industry expectation rather than a legal requirement.

The distinction matters if you play. Should it land on four out of fifteen, a quarter of the coupon suddenly depends on a competition most Quiniela players do not follow week to week. Which is less of a problem than it sounds, and more of an opening.

How to call Liga F games you have never watched

Most people's instinct will be to stick a draw in those boxes and move on. That is precisely the mistake. If everyone else in your group is guessing on those four matches, half an hour of homework buys you a bigger edge there than on any top-flight fixture, where you are all working from identical information. Here is what is worth looking at:

• Read the table before you read the badge. The gap between the top of Liga F and the middle of it is substantial, and scorelines reflect that — a heavyweight against a lower-half side tends to be far less competitive than the equivalent men's fixture.
• Do not assume home advantage. Grounds, crowds and playing surfaces vary enormously between clubs, so check how a specific side has actually performed at home in recent weeks rather than applying the usual rule of thumb.
• Remember the calendar is shorter than LaLiga's. There are fewer rounds in which to fix a bad start, so the table settles earlier and an early run of form tells you more than the same run would in August in the men's game.
• Watch transfers and international call-ups. Squads are thinner, and losing one decisive player moves the needle on a result far more than an equivalent absence at a top-flight men's club.
• Treat the opening rounds as calibration. Nobody has a read on Liga F 2026-27 yet — not you, not your rivals. Whoever starts taking notes in September arrives in November with a real advantage.

A season to look at the coupon differently

Since 1946 the Quiniela has been one of those Spanish institutions everyone takes for granted. The format has changed, the prizes have changed, it survived the arrival of the bookmakers and then of the betting apps — and through all of it the coupon told the same story: men's professional football, and nothing else. That names like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético will now appear in their women's form, sharing the same fifteen boxes, looks like a small edit and is anything but.
