Atlético could play the 2027 Champions final at home

The 2026-27 Champions League final will be played on 5 June 2027 at Atlético's Metropolitano. Only four clubs have ever contested the final in their own stadium, and only two won it. Monaco's draw has set the route.

The 2026-27 Champions League draw, held in Monaco on Thursday 27 August, handed Spain's five representatives a genuinely daunting set of fixtures. But buried among the headline ties is the detail Atlético Madrid fans keep coming back to: the 2027 final will be played on 5 June at their own Metropolitano. Go all the way, and Diego Simeone's side would contest the biggest club match in football in their own home. In the entire history of the European Cup, only four clubs have ever played the final in their own stadium — and only two of them won it. Thursday's draw didn't just deal out opponents; it gave a date and a venue to one of European football's oldest fantasies: winning the Champions League at home.

A brutal draw, with a unique prize at the end of the road

The ceremony at Monaco's Grimaldi Forum assigned eight opponents to each of the 36 league-phase clubs — four at home, four away — with the top eight going straight to the last 16 and places 9 to 24 heading into a knockout play-off. Atlético landed one of the tougher hands in the room, though the fixture list leaves room to bank points too. Here is who they got:

  • Bayern Munich: one of the heavyweight names from pot 1
  • Liverpool: a rematch of a classic Simeone-era knockout tie
  • Manchester United: a fallen giant back in Europe's top competition
  • PSV Eindhoven and Stuttgart: solid mid-tier European opposition
  • Fenerbahçe: an away night in Istanbul that nobody enjoys
  • Bodø/Glimt and Viking: two trips to Norway, cold weather all but guaranteed

Three giants in Bayern, Liverpool and United, two mid-table European sides, and three fixtures that look winnable on paper. For a team aiming at a top-eight finish and a bye past February's play-off round, the margin is there — but plenty of those points will have to be earned away from home. The extra motivation writes itself: every point brings a final at the Metropolitano, a first in the club's history, a little closer.

Only two clubs have ever won the final on home soil

The European Cup has been running since 1956, yet you can count the 'home finals' on one hand. It has happened just four times, and the ledger is split right down the middle: two triumphs, two heartbreaks.

  • 1957 — Real Madrid 2-0 Fiorentina at the Santiago Bernabéu: still the only Spanish club to win the final in its own ground
  • 1965 — Inter Milan 1-0 Benfica at San Siro: the last time anyone lifted the trophy at home
  • 1984 — Roma lost on penalties to Liverpool at their own Stadio Olimpico
  • 2012 — Bayern lost on penalties to Chelsea at the Allianz Arena, the infamous failed 'finale dahoam'

In other words, more than sixty years have passed since a club last won Europe's biggest prize on its own pitch, and the last two who tried both ended the night in tears after penalty shoot-outs. The Metropolitano has staged a Champions League final before — Liverpool's 2-0 win over Tottenham in 2019 — but that evening Atlético supporters watched someone else's party from the outside. June 2027 could be a very different story.

Where and when is the 2026-27 Champions League final? Saturday 5 June 2027 at the Metropolitano in Madrid. It will be the stadium's second Champions League final, after Liverpool vs Tottenham in 2019.

The road ahead for Spain's five clubs

Spain once again has five teams in the league phase, and hardly any of them got off lightly. Real Madrid drew Inter, Arsenal, Roma, RB Leipzig, PSV, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK and AEK Athens — with Arsenal-Madrid renewing a rivalry sharpened by their recent knockout meetings. Barcelona arguably have the heaviest card of all: Manchester City, PSG — winners of the last two editions and chasing a third straight crown — Aston Villa, Sporting CP, Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Como and Sabah. Villarreal face PSG, Liverpool, Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Fenerbahçe, Slavia Prague and Sabah. And Real Betis, making their debut in the new format, take on Arsenal, Bayern, Porto, Dortmund, Feyenoord, Lille, Como and Slovan Bratislava.

The format is unforgiving: across just eight matchdays, two bad nights can drop you from the top eight into the play-offs, and three can end your European season in January. Matchday 1 is already scheduled for 8-10 September 2026, and the league phase wraps up on 27 January 2027 with every game kicking off simultaneously.

When does the 2026-27 Champions League start? Matchday 1 of the league phase runs from 8 to 10 September 2026. The league phase ends on 27 January 2027, and the final is on 5 June 2027 in Madrid.
